this page is about my use of linux.....which, by the way this page was made 100% in slackware linux.... which i really enjoy using.....
well i installed slackware 10 on my dell inspiron 8100 and i must say i am very pleased by the newest member of the slack family. below you will find a few tips that you might find useful.....dig


slackware 10 and mysql

ok, so you've just installed slackware 10, you need mysql running for some program and when you try and run it, after typing 'mysql' from the command line you get nothing but problems, probably you're getting permission denied or can't find such and such file. Well, here ya go, do this and you're done...

as root: /usr/bin/mysql_install_db

cp /etc/my-small.cnf /etc/my.cnf

there are a few other sample cnf files in /etc, you could cp one of them as my.cnf if you like

chown -R mysql:mysql /var/lib/mysql /usr/share/mysql/mysql.server start

/usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root password "your password"

make sure you use the "" around your password. . after you hit enter for this, it's going to ask you for a password if you type 'mysql'

cp /usr/share/mysql/mysql.server /etc/rc.d/rc.mysql

Now, unless you messed around with, and if /etc/rc.d/rc.mysql is executible(should be), then mysql will run on bootup. if /etc/rc.mysql is not executable type 'chmod 644 /etc/rc.mysql'.....that should do it....mysql should be up and running .....just don forget the password.....dig



so....you wanna recompile your kernel....???

here is how i do it....i use two methods. the top method involves making a new kernel and keeping your current kernel. this methed is good if you are not sure what options to leave and which ones to turn off. when you boot, lilo(i use lilo.. .it blows grub out of the water) will give you an option which kernel to boot to....if you borked the recompile(happens all the time) then you have your original working kernel to boot with.....

here the steps i use to upgrade a kernel and keep the old one ....just in case(see above)....

make menuconfig
make dep (if you are changing the kernel version)
make bzImage
make modules
make modules_install

cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/bzImage-kernel version
cp System.map /boot/System.map-kernel version
ln -sf /boot/System.map-kernel version /boot/System.map

lilo

reboot and enjoy your new freshly compiled kernel!....

here is the second method....it is a quicker method it is best used for small changes. it is very useful when you forget something small from the first method like turning on ACPI, filesystem support, or getting you network card back on after you accidently turned it off.... the main difference in the two methods is that this one doesn't give you the option to keep your existing kernel...it just modifies it...

make bzImage
make modules
make modules_install (notice the underscore)
make install
make clean


reboot and enjoy your freshly modified kernel!....



slackware 10 - xorg.conf

this is the /etc/X11/xorg.conf that i use on my laptop. its video card is an nvidia 32Mb geforce 2 GO... one should be able to use this for just about any video card....just be sure to check the monitor refresh rates and driver section. if you have an nvidia card then you need to install the correct drivers. you can get them atnvidia's website. the drivers install very easily...but just in case..

after you download the drivers go to the location you have them and type:(your driver name may vary...just type out "NVI" and hit 'tab'
sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-5336-pkg1.run

it will run through its deal, ask you a few questions, and that will take care of the driver install....

slackware 10 and 802.11(wireless) configuration

i have a 3com WPC11 wireless adapter, it uses the orinoco driver, and is supported out of the box with slackware....so with that in mind this what i did to get it going. you will need to change the ip addresses and WEP settings to fit your needs. if you do not use any WEP in your network then you would omit the key line and in the essid line you would put the word 'any' instead of 'pro'...

at the prompt type:

modprobe orinoco
iwconfig eth0 essid pro
iwconfig eth0 key 55EB902D0019F44900EB128949
ifconfig eth0 inet 10.0.0.111 broadcast 10.0.0.255 netmask 255.255.255.0 up
dhcpcd eth0


OR IF USING SLACKWARE 10........

you could just edit /etc/rc.d/rc.wireless.conf....

near the top of the file you will need to change the "INFO", "ESSID", and if needed add a "KEY". the INFO part is not that important so change it if you want to, but will need to change the ESSID to your own and if you are using WEP security then you will need to add a line right below the ESSID simular to this(depends on what your key looks like):

KEY="DFLKJLKJLKWEIDKLED"

save /etc/rc.d/rc.wireless.conf, reboot, and all should be gravy....
